Small Birds In The Garden

Small Birds In The Garden

We've got plenty of small birds in the garden at the moment. There always seems to be a flock of silvereye (tauhou) around somewhere either in the trees or in the hebes and there's always a couple of fantails (piwakawaka) flitting around.  More elusive are the grey warbler (riroriro) which I often see flitting around in the shadows but are much more difficult to photograph.  I always get a thrill when I get a good shot of a grey warbler, they never sit still and at best you get two seconds to frame zoom and focus before they're off again so I was particularly pleased with the shot below.

Quite often I'll see both grey warbler and fantail tagging along with a flock of silvereye as they make their way foraging around the garden.

We've recently had a small flock of goldfinch (about ten of them) become regular visitors to the garden again. We used to get quite large flocks foraging on our lawn but then for the last couple of years we've hardly seen them - just one or two on rare ocassions, so let's hope they stay.
