Milford Sound - 2010
I've been sorting out photos from a family trip we made around the South Island in 2010. We spent two nights at Milford Sound at the beginning of January and had one of those occassions where you experience four seasons in a day.
We arrived in the evening to heavy rain with a severe overnight storm which brought snow to the high country covering Mitre Peak and the other peaks around Milford Sound with a dusting of snow. In the morning the storm broke up and cleared and we ended up with a warm sunny morning. In the early afternoon the weather closed in again with rain and snow then by the evening it was fine and clear again with nearly all the new snow either melted or washed off the peaks.
So I guese we were lucky, in the course of a single day we got to see Mitre Peak in all its moods. There are many who come for a single day and only ever see it clouded over.
Mitre Peak just after dawn with a fresh dusting of snow as the cloud starts to lift.
Milford Sound with the storm cloud slowly breaking up and clearing away from the high peaks.
The morning sun breaking through onto Mitre Peak As the Cloud breaks up.
Mitre Peak reflected in the still waters of Milford Sound
Late afternoon with the cloud once more clearing from the peaks of Mitre Peak and The Lion afer closing in and raining in the afternoon.
Mitre Peak, just before sunset with the new snow all but disappeared. The next morning the whole sound was covered in heavy cloud with the rain setting in again as we left.
