Photos Of The Mountain

Our landscape, and in fact our weather patterns, in Taranaki are dominated by the mountain.  Even when we can't see it, it maintains its presence, a solid mass towering over the province. Its appearance is as changeable as our weather changing from moment to moment as the light and atmospheric conditions shift. One moment hazy and distant, the next disappearing from sight then suddenly towering over us sharp and clear. I have grown up in the shadow of Taranaki, climbing it for the first time as a young child with my father. Every climb since then has been a sacred experience for me, a sharing of my soul with the soul of the mountain, a meeting with an old friend who sometimes turns me back. These images are in honour of my old friend, Taranaki.
